Taking the first step towards therapy can feel like a big decision.
Many parents come to us with questions such as:
“Does my child need therapy?”
“What happens in Occupational Therapy or Speech Therapy?”
“How do I know if I’m making the right choice?”
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
At Upside Down Therapy, we know that every family’s journey looks different. Sometimes concerns have been building, and other times it’s a teacher, GP, or family member who first suggests seeking support. Whatever brings you here, our goal is to make the process feel clear, supportive, and empowering from the very beginning.
Whether your child would benefit from Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, or both, understanding what to expect can help make those first steps feel a little less overwhelming.
When Should You Reach Out for Support?
One of the most common questions we hear is, “Should I be concerned, or will my child grow out of it?”
The reality is that every child develops differently. However, if something doesn’t feel quite right, it’s okay to ask questions and seek guidance. Early support can often help children develop skills, confidence, and strategies before challenges begin to impact their everyday life.
You may consider therapy support if your child experiences challenges with:
Occupational Therapy
- Managing emotions and big feelings
- Sensory sensitivities or sensory-seeking behaviours
- Fine motor skills such as drawing, cutting, or handwriting
- Gross motor coordination, balance, or body awareness
- Attention and concentration
- Daily tasks like dressing, eating, toileting, or sleep routines
- School readiness and independence skills
Speech Therapy
- Delayed speech or language development
- Difficulty understanding instructions
- Challenges expressing thoughts, needs, or ideas
- Speech that is difficult for others to understand
- Social communication and interaction skills
- Confidence with conversations and friendships
- Early literacy skills
- Feeding and mealtime concerns
Importantly, your child does not need a diagnosis to access therapy. Many families simply want support, guidance, or a better understanding of their child’s development.
Your First Step: The Journey Planning Session
At Upside Down Therapy, we believe that getting to know your child is the most important place to start. That’s why every family’s journey begins with a Journey Planning Session.
This isn’t just about identifying challenges. It’s about understanding the whole child. We want to learn about your child’s strengths, interests, personality, goals, and daily experiences. We also take time to understand your family’s concerns, priorities, and hopes for therapy.
Before your appointment, we’ll send you a welcome pack to complete and return. Families can also share any reports, assessments, school information, or NDIS documentation that may be helpful.
This information allows our team to begin building a personalised picture of your child’s unique journey before you even walk through the door.
Understanding the “Why”
Sometimes parents can clearly see what their child is struggling with, but they’re not always sure why it’s happening.
For example:
- A child may avoid handwriting because fine motor skills are difficult.
- A child may become overwhelmed in busy environments due to sensory sensitivities.
- A child may struggle socially because they find communication challenging.
- A child may appear inattentive when they’re actually working hard to process information.
Our therapists use their clinical expertise to look beyond the surface and understand the underlying factors contributing to your child’s challenges. This helps us create therapy plans that are meaningful, targeted, and focused on real-life outcomes.
What Happens Next?
Following your Journey Planning Session, we may recommend further assessment to gain a deeper understanding of your child’s strengths and support needs.
Assessments are designed to be engaging, play-based, and child-friendly. We want children to feel comfortable, connected, and successful while we learn about their development.
Depending on your child’s goals, we may assess areas such as:
- Communication and language skills
- Speech sound development
- Social communication
- Sensory processing
- Emotional regulation
- Fine and gross motor skills
- Play skills
- Daily living skills
- Participation at home, school, and in the community
Once we have a clear understanding of your child’s needs, we work collaboratively with you to develop meaningful therapy goals.
What Does Therapy Look Like?
One of the biggest surprises for many families is that therapy often looks a lot like play. Children learn best when they feel safe, connected, and engaged. That’s why our Occupational Therapists and Speech Pathologists use playful, evidence-based approaches that make learning meaningful and enjoyable.
Sessions may include:
- Games and play activities
- Movement and sensory experiences
- Communication and language-building activities
- Social skill development
- Emotional regulation strategies
- Independence and life skill development
- Family coaching and support
- Collaboration with schools and other professionals
While every therapy plan is different, the goal is always the same: helping children participate more confidently and successfully in the activities that matter most to them.
Therapy Is a Team Effort
One of the most important things to know is that therapy isn’t something that happens only during sessions. Parents, caregivers, educators, therapists, and children all play an important role in the journey. We work closely with families to ensure strategies can be carried over into everyday life, helping children build skills across different environments and experiences. When everyone works together, children are often able to make meaningful and lasting progress.
